Women Composing

a celebration through the centuries to the present

About this Website

This website celebrates the music of women composers. It began as a series of daily Facebook posts from March 2022 through August 2022, which were then consolidated into six blog entries, and then moved into this website. The blog entries will remain static; I hope to keep this website updated with additional composers and music.

If you want to suggest corrections or the addition of other composers, let me know at cp@charlespetzold.com.

Keep in mind that this site focuses primarily on the music of these composers, and I particularly enjoy live performances on YouTube. If none of the composer's music can be found on YouTube, they're not a good candidate for this site.

Most of the composers on this site write music for orchestras, chamber ensembles, choruses, or solo instruments such as piano or violin, that is intended to be played in concert halls. But this site is not limited to those composers. Some of the women on this site compose music for jazz ensembles, while others write scores for films and television programs. Still others create electronic compositions that exist only as recorded sound. A few improvise on electronic instruments or the piano in live performances.

However, composers who primarily write songs in blues or rock idioms are not a good fit for this site. While I certainly enjoy the songwriting of Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Patti Smith, Amy Winehouse, and many others, perhaps someone else is more qualified to create a website celebrating these wonderful talents.
